Review of Bloom & Nora Reusable Pads:

Today’s blog is all about Bloom & Nora, an amazing eco friendly feminine hygiene business that strives to help the planet and combat the climate crisis, through producing 100% recyclable pads to be used for periods!

I have been lucky enough to try their new watercolour rainbow range, available now on their website. Their new range also includes plain white pads, which can be worn under summer clothing, if you prefer them!

The Watercolour and White Ranges

As an eco-conscious individual, I have always been aware of the detrimental impact that pads and tampons have on the planet. Additionally, they can affect our health. Research has proven that disposable tampons and pads contain chemicals that women can become exposed to, such as: chlorine and dioxin (two of the most toxic substances) which can still be found in menstrual pads and tampons.

Most tampons and pads are also not made with cotton. Instead, synthetic fabric are used that feel like cotton but are much more absorbent. So absorbent, that they can lead to a huge increase in cases of toxic shock syndrome. As well, the cost per use for reusable pads is 72% less than disposables with reusable pads saving one person up to £2000 versus disposables, in the long term, which is amazing!

I love the Bloom & Nora range, not just because of what great value they are, but also as they are also super soft, due to being made from chemical free bamboo fabric!

The Watercolour pad collection includes pads suitable for all variations of flow.

Having tried Bloom & Nora Pads, here are some of the reasons you should consider investing in them:

  • Disposable pads end up going to landfill sites where they break down for over 500 years! As well, one pack of disposable pads can contain as much plastic as 4 plastic carrier bags. To make matters worse, not all disposables end up in landfill but instead find themselves on our shores or in the oceans, where they can pose a serious risk to marine life.
  • One person will use an average of 12,000 disposable sanitary products through their lifetime, producing 5 tonnes of waste! In contrast, using reusable pads can stop pollutive damage to Earth. The Bloom & Nora Pads are also really affordable too!

Most people who remain reluctant to try reusable pads are usually worried about how to clean out the blood, so then they can be re-worn. With Bloom & Nora, hygiene concerns surrounding the pads are not an issue, particularly as these pads are chemical free and made from natural bamboo fabric to avoid bacteria and odour build up. These pads are therefore easy to wear and only need replacing a couple times a day in order to feel refreshed!

How do you clean the pads?

Blood is sterile and is one of the most natural things on the planet, meaning that from just rinsing your pads under the tap and then putting them in the washing machine with the rest of your undies the reusable pads can easily be cleaned! As well, compared to flimsy disposable pads with strips which can cause rashes, these ultra-absorbent soft reusable pads are so well made that they can be used up to 150 times and still remain comfortable!

Bloom & Nora are also striving to end period poverty, by providing free sanitary products to ALL the schools and colleges in England.  This means all learners in schools and 16-19 organisations can receive free period products. This includes people who have forgotten period products, cannot afford products or have started their period unexpectedly. For more information on this initiative, see the Bloom & Nora website.

If you are considering making the switch to reusable pads, check out the Bloom & Nora Trial Kit, which comes with 4 pads in different sizes (1x mini, 1x midi, 1x maxi, 1x mighty) so you can test which works best for your flow! You will also receive an ‘Out & About’ bag, which has separate compartments; one for used pads and one for clean ones. It is made from 100% recycled bottles!
